Uma rapariga, um rapaz e alguma prole demoníaca da pesada…
Quando o quarto livro da série “Demon Trappers” foi publicado em 2012, os meus editores disseram "Este é o último livro". Os meus leitores ficaram tristes. Eu também, porque no fundo do meu coração eu sabia que sempre tinha planeado seis livros. Havia mais "história" para contar.
Avançando para 2013, os meus leitores continuaram a contactar-me, querendo mais livros de Riley Blackthorne e Denver Beck. Onde iam ficar noivos, casar? Ter bebés? (Recebo um monte de e-mails sobre o último.)
Então escrevi a novela “Grave Matters” publicada de forma independente (Demon Trappers #4.5). Tem lugar em Edimburgo, Escócia, onde Beck está a fazer o seu treino para se tornar um grande mestre. Riley junta-se a ele aí e coisas más acontecem (como costuma acontecer com estes dois). Mas no final do livro encontramo-los <SPOILER> noivos e ansiosos pelo futuro, mais fortes do que nunca.
Um ano mais ou menos passou enquanto trabalhava noutros livros, mas as minhas duas personagens favoritas continuaram a dar-me cotoveladas nas costelas. Continuaram a sussurrar-me aos ouvidos. Quando fiz uma pausa entre os projetos nesta primavera, MIND GAMES saiu-me dos dedos a alta velocidade. Foi tão rápido que foi embaraçoso. Aparentemente ter algum tempo para pensar sobre a história tornou mais fácil escrevê-la.
Sou uma grande fã de "consequências não intencionais", aquelas coisas que regressam para nos assombrar, porque as fizemos por serem o acertado num determinado momento. Riley está a enfrentar esse tipo de problemas após a sua quase-morte em Edimburgo. Desejosa de proteger-se e ao seu noivo, Denver Beck, ela começa a aprender magia das bruxas e dos conjuradores.
Mas isso é um problema para algumas pessoas. Riley é confrontada com dois caminhos: abandonar o sonho que tem desde que o seu pai se tornou-se num mestre caçador de demónios ou seguir numa nova direção, uma direção cheia de ainda mais incerteza e perigo.
A coisa que mais gosto em Riley e Den é que eles continuam a crescer ao longo da série. Eles cometem erros, mas aprendem, amadurecem. E o seu amor permanece forte apesar do que o Inferno (e vida quotidiana) lhes atira. Adoro escrever as suas histórias.
Agora que MIND GAMES saiu, prevejo mais um livro da série. Não, não haverá nenhuns nascimentos (sorriso), mas a razão por que Riley e Beck aguentaram e sofreram tanto, tornando-se quem são, será revelada. E, esperançosamente, eles podem superar o perigo mais grave que os ameaça não só a eles, mas à cidade que chamam de casa.

A girl, a guy and some seriously badass Hellspawn...
When the fourth book in my Demon Trappers’ series was published way back in 2012, my publishers said, “This is the last book.” My readers were sad. So was I, because deep in my heart I knew I’d always planned for six books. There was more “story” to tell.
Fast forward to 2013 when my readers kept nudging me, wanting more Riley Blackthorne and Denver Beck books. Where they going to get engaged, married? Have babies? (I get a lot of e-mails about that last one.)
So I wrote and independently published GRAVE MATTERS (Demon Trappers #4.5) which is a novella. It’s primary setting is Edinburgh, Scotland where Beck is pursuing his training to become a grand master. Riley joins him there and bad stuff ensues (as it often does with these two). But at the end of that book we find them <SPOILER> engaged and looking forward to the future, stronger than ever.
A year or so passed as I worked on other books, but my two favorite characters kept elbowing me in the ribs. Kept whispering in my ears. When I took a break between projects this spring, MIND GAMES came out of the end of my fingers at lightening speed. It went so fast it was embarrassing. Apparently having some time to think through the story made it easier to write.
I’m a big fan of “unintended consequences”, those things that came back to haunt you because you did what was right at a certain moment. Riley is facing those kind of problems after her near death in Edinburgh. Keen to protect herself, and her fiancé, Denver Beck, she’s learning magic from the witches and the summoners.
But that’s a problem for some folks. Riley is faced with two paths: abandon the dream she’s had since her father first became a master demon trapper, or go in a new direction. A direction filled with even more uncertainty and danger.
The thing I like most about Riley and Den is that they continue to grow over the course of the series. They make mistakes, but they learn, they mature. And their love remains strong throughout all that Hell (and everyday life) can throw at them. I love writing their stories.
Now that MIND GAMES is out, I foresee one more book in the series. No, there won’t be any births (grin) but the reason that Riley and Beck had endured so much, become who they are, will be revealed. And, hopefully, they can overcome the gravest danger than threatens not only them, but the city they call home.
